Tips for Traveling With Your Dogs

By Debbie Ray

Whenever I travel with my dog, I usually have to fly across the country. This allows for a speedy destination time, but also poses a few new problems. First time pet flyers must ask a few questions before boarding and before buying a pets ticket. Each way, dog tickets cost from $75 to $150 - one way, this can, all together, easily cost a pet owner $150 to $300 for a round trip ticket. My pets last trip cost far exceeded my own ticket price, as his ticket was $150 more than mine.

Many people say that the reason for charging so much is to deter people from flying on airplanes with their pet, but I truly think it is because the airplanes can charge that much and people will pay it because it is a monopoly and you really don’t have anywhere else to go. Dogs over 15 pounds must fly as luggage and need to be checked. Smaller dogs are allowed to fly in the cabin, but there are only 2-3 dogs allowed per flight. So, when making a reservation for yourself, it is best to check with the airline first and make sure that they are not full with pets before you buy your ticket. Dogs with short noses like pugs are not allowed to fly because when you get to a high altitude, it may be hard for a dog with a short nose to breathe.

Once a ticket for a pet is purchased, you must look around for a kind of luggage that is approved to take on the airplane. Something to keep in mind is that your pet counts as your carry-on luggage, so you are not allowed to have another carry on item. Airlines are pretty lenient about what type of bag is allowed to be bought for the dog. All they really ask is that the dog is allowed to stand up in the bag, and allowed to turn around. I have a mesh bag that has wheels so I can zip around the airport easily.

Some dogs hate flying. I have even heard some whine and seen my dog cry. It would be of benefit to you and your dog if you took your dog to the vet, and got a certification to travel. If you happen to have pet insurance with Banfield, they give this to you for free. Some states require that you have this documentation, but I have never seen anybody ask for it or enforce it but better safe than sorry. It is also a good idea to go to the vet because they will let you know if you should give medicine to your dog to help its flight be less stressful and if so, what to use. Happy traveling with your dog.

Raw Food Weight Loss - Can You Lose Weight On A Raw Food Diet?

By Helen Hecker

If you’ve been hearing a lot more about raw food diets and raw food weight loss in particular you may be wondering if you can actually lose weight on a raw food diet.

First of all what is a raw food diet. Unlike other diets out there and totally unlike weight loss diets a raw food diet is basically a diet that consists of raw foods. Living foods as some people call them. A raw food diet can be whatever you like as long as it incorporates a lot of raw foods or all raw foods. What do I mean by a lot of raw foods? Well technically that means usually 75% to 80% raw foods. 100 % raw foods is a good raw food diet to aim for but many find that they can’t give up certain comfort foods.

Raw foods are fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds that are not cooked, canned, refined or processed in any way. They are in their natural form. They may be fresh from the tree or garden or purchased at your local whole health foods store or regular grocery.

If you ask people who eat a raw food diet if they have lost weight on it you will always hear a resounding yes. I lost 10 pounds so fast it scared me when I started on raw foods almost ten years ago now. Many who had a lot more weight to lose dropped pounds significantly and fast.

The nice thing about raw foods is that they are healthy! Many diets are not healthy and laden with fatty foods. Some even say it’s okay to eat them. There are dozens of new diet programs coming onto the market all the time. To sell diet books perhaps or various diet plans or diet programs. But the truth is you can make up your own raw food diet just by deciding you’re going to eat predominately raw foods.

The important thing to remember is that whatever you choose you should eat a lot of. If you’re going to eat a lot of fruit - that isn’t just a banana and apple a day. You want to eat a lot of fruits and especially different fruits to get the benefit of all the different phytonutrients and other antioxidants, vitamins and minerals they contain. You’ll feel energized and notice health problems disappearing along with a fast weight loss.

You’ll want to eat huge salads. I eat a giant salad every night for dinner and have a smaller salad at lunchtime and lots of fruits and freshly extracted juice throughout the day. And you don’t have to give up a special food or two if you have to have it. If you are eating predominately raw foods you can have something that is important to you now and then.

I enjoy 100% raw foods myself and look forward to eating them. I no longer have any desire for foods that are not living. Cooked foods are dead foods and I have no desire for them. I cured myself of breast cancer, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, celiac disease, chronic sinus problems, headaches and many other health problems almost overnight! A raw food diet is a natural detox plan - no cleanses needed!

A raw food diet can significantly benefit your health and reward you with the healthiest type of weight loss. A raw food weight loss is the best diet plan. And if you continue to eat this way for a lifetime you will enjoy superior health!

For my raw food diet cure and secrets - how I used it to help cure my breast cancer, arthritis, fibromyalgia, acid reflux-digestive, sleep issues, headaches, pain, weight loss, etc. see a nurse/raw food expert’s http://www.RawFoodDietCure.com and my easy raw food recipes http://www.RecipesRaw.com

To Lose Weight You Must Follow These Five Commandments

By Matt Lisk

There are a million diet plans on the market today. You can increase your chance of picking a suitable plan if you look for these five commandments of successful weight loss.

Satiety

Satiety is feeling full, gratified. Most diet programs leave people feeling unsatisfied - which has a host of other effects. When you feel hungry, you increase the likelihood that you will binge the next time you eat. Hunger can also lead to depression, anger, and headaches.

A diet can tackle satiety in several ways - like eating every 3-4 hours. This is a component of most diet plans available today for a very good reason - eating smaller, more frequent meals has been proven to help burn fat and keep your metabolism revved up.

Calorie Deficit

For fat loss to occur, you must burn more calories than you take in. There are several components to creating a calorie “deficit”, and using them all together will be the most effective. Plus, you won’t be starving yourself like you usually do when you diet. Achieving satiety at the same time as creating a calorie deficit is difficult but not impossible.

How do you create this calorie deficit? It is a combination of watching your intake along with the right types of exercise, which burn calories during and after activity, as long as 36 hours after completion!

Besides eating every 3-4 hours, your diet needs to be rich in 4 components known to make you feel “fuller” but also contribute to fat burning - protein, fats, fiber and water.

Portion Control

One of the most difficult aspects of any fat loss program is getting your portion sizes under control. To achieve fat loss you must create a calorie deficit, and one of the ways to do this is through controlling your food portions - but how do you do this while not feeling hungry?

Consuming a lean protein along with healthy fats and fiber at each meal, and eating each meal 3-4 hours apart BEFORE you have a chance to feel hungry again, will cover the satiety aspect. You will also feel satisfied with less food, achieving portion control without focusing on it.

Regularity

You must include fiber-rich foods in your diet (beans, peas, apples, grapefruit). A major advantage of fiber is the effect on weight control. Studies have shown that the majority of obese people have diets miserably low in fiber. Since fiber-rich foods are filling and usually low in fat, you’ll feel more satisfied with less food and lose weight more easily.

It is recommended that between 20 and 30 grams of fiber be consumed daily and at least eight glasses of water to aid the movement of food through the digestive tract.

Hydration

Dehydration inhibits fat loss. Most people don’t get enough water on a daily basis, never mind for training / fat loss. When you don’t have enough water, your bowels will also slow down.

Here are a few tips for getting more water into your daily intake:

1. Never let yourself get thirsty - drink enough that you do not feel dehydrated.

2. If exercising, consume one ounce of water for every ounce of body weight lost during exercise. So if you lost one pound after exercising, you should consume 16 ounces of water.

3. If you are a goal-oriented person, get a half-gallon jug of water and carry it around with you - your goal is to drink it all by the end of the day

Eating BBQ In Washington

By Jill Sabato

Looking for a that will knock your socks off? The Porch is a Washington BBQ restaurant that will take care of those sweet and smoky BBQ cravings and will top everything off with some sumptuous desserts. Before we introduce the Porch’s menu however, let’s talk a little about the history of BBQ.

The History of Washington BBQ Well, first of all, BBQ did not originate in Washington, as you can probably guess. After all, man has been cooking his meat over an open fire ever since the caveman days. However, the cavemen were not loading on the A-1 or Teriyaki either-so where did the BBQ traditions that we are familiar (i.e. backyard, sauce, etc.) with begin?

The Origin of BBQ: Where did it begin and what about Washington BBQ? The theories are many and varied when it comes to the origin of BBQ. Some of the theories say that barbecue originated in the west, some say that it was in the southern United States, and some even claim that it originated in Europe. My favorite version1 of the origin of BBQ-and one of the more believable ones–is the western cowboy version. However, before we ‘dig in’ to the history (or the legend) we should probably define what real and true BBQ is:

BBQ is the process of slowly cooking meat over wood or coal. The wood or coal cannot be too hot (about 200 degrees is perfect) and gas does not count! Those who use gas grills today will have to face the facts and realize that a gas grill….grills…..it does not barbeque, although there are those who insist that it is really the sauce that classifies meat as barbecued meat.

Whatever definition you prefer to accept, here is the Western cowboy origin of BBQ:

The Origin of BBQ: Washington BBQ didn’t start in Washington In the late 1800’s there were many cattle drives that took place. Those who drove the cattle were cowboys and those who were in charge of the cowboys were the cattle barons. The cattle barons, like so many businessmen, scrimped when it came to paying (or in this case) feeding their employees. The cattle barons would supply the cowboys with the tough meat portions. These tough meat portions were referred to as brisket and were not exactly appetizing. The cowboys found however that if the meat was left to cook very slowly over wood or coal that in 5-7 hours the meat would make a delicious meal. This however, leaves us with the question of where the tradition of sauce came from.

Washington BBQ with Sauce….Did it Originate in the South? As mentioned above, many sources indicate that the tradition of barbecued meat marinated in various sauces originated in the southern United States before the civil war. Pigs were abundant at the time and were one of the staples of the south. Traditional BBQ made it possible to use every part of a pig and with sauces make it taste like a delicacy. Barbecue became an important part of religious, social and political functions. Barbecues also seem to be the kind of meal that both the rich and the poor alike can appreciate.

Washington BBQ Restaurants Today Today those who live in Washington and others from around the nation thoroughly enjoy a good old fashioned backyard barbecue. Washington BBQ restaurants have also become a regular part of Washington fine dining and entertainment. After all, not everybody has the time to barbecue, but they still want that sweet, smoky irresistible flavor that people have now enjoyed for decades.

Using the absorbed power method to evaluate effectiveness of vibration absorption of selected seat cushions during manual wheelchair propulsion

Using the absorbed power method to evaluate effectiveness of vibration absorption of selected seat cushions during manual wheelchair propulsion

Although medicare power wheelchairs and handicap scooters users are frequently subjected to oscillatory and shock vibrations, little research has been conducted to assess the whole-body vibration exposure of wheelchair users. The purpose of this study was to determine if selected wheelchair cushions alter potentially harmful whole-body vibrations transferred to wheelchair users. Thirty-two participants, who use wheelchairs as their primary mode of mobility, contributed to this study. Four of the most commonly prescribed wheelchair cushions were selected. Participants were asked to propel their wheelchair over a simulated activities of daily living (ADL) course while acceleration and force data were recorded. A repeated measures ANOVA showed no significant differences between the different cushions for the total averaged absorbed power (p = 0.190), the 50 mm curb drop (p = 0.234), or the rumble strip (p = 0.143). A repeated measure ANOVA for the peak curb drop absorbed power revealed a significant difference in the cushions (p = 0.043). The cushions that were most effective in this testing appear to be the Invacare Pindot and the Varilite Solo. Not only did those cushions appear to have the lowest values much of the time but also they did not display the highest values. When comparing results from a similar study, absorbed power appears to be as effective in determining vibration effects in the time domain as the methods in the ISO 2631 Standard.
